Hi, I’m Amar. I’m a computer science student at York University, and I like to build things.
Most of what I’ve learned about programming, I learned by making software I actually wanted to exist and figuring out whatever I needed to along the way. I find that far more interesting than learning things in the abstract. A real project forces me to deal with problems I’d never run into otherwise, and that’s usually where my learning happens.
What I want out of work
I prefer working in an office. I had assumed I’d prefer working from home, since nearly all of my communication with my team happens online anyway. In practice the unplanned parts matter more than I expected: lunches and hallway conversations with people from other teams, most of whom I’d never otherwise talk to.
I strongly value difficult work. I’d have guessed I wanted tasks to be comfortable. I’m noticeably more engaged when they aren’t.
I want work that runs over months rather than one-offs, colleagues who are easy to work with, and honest feedback about whether what I’ve built is any good.
My interests
I like to play video games, read, and learn deeply about various subjects, inside and outside my field of study.
